Need a PNG version of a JPG/JPEG on your iPhone or iPad—without uploading to a website or installing extra apps? You can do it in seconds using Apple’s built-in tools: Files (fastest) or Shortcuts (best for repeat + batch).
Fastest: Files → Quick Actions → Convert Image → PNG (iOS/iPadOS 16+).
Best for repeat/batch: A Shortcut using a transform action to convert images to PNG, then save to Files/Photos.
Before you start
1) Check your software version
The Files app Convert Image quick action is commonly documented as part of iOS 16 / iPadOS 16 and later.
2) Make sure the image is in the Files app
If your picture is in Photos, first do: Share → Save to Files (then convert inside Files). This is the cleanest workflow for the Files method.
Method 1 (fastest): Convert JPG to PNG using the Files app
- Open Files and find your JPG/JPEG.
- Press and hold the image.
- Tap Quick Actions.
- Tap Convert Image.
- Choose PNG as the format.
- If you see size options, choose Original to keep the same dimensions.
Batch convert multiple JPGs to PNG (Files app)
If you have many images:
- In Files, open the folder with the JPGs.
- Tap ••• → Select.
- Select multiple images.
- Tap ••• → Convert Image → PNG.
Result: You’ll get new PNG files alongside your originals (great for keeping backups).
Method 2 (best for repeat work): Convert JPG to PNG with a Shortcut
Apple explains that transform actions in Shortcuts can convert content from one format to another, and you can use them for more control.
- Build a 1-tap “Convert to PNG” Shortcut
- Open Shortcuts → tap +.
- Tap Add Action → search Convert Image.
- Set Format to PNG.
- Add Save File (to Files) or Save to Photo Album (to Photos).
- Tap the shortcut name → enable Show in Share Sheet.
Use the Shortcut from Photos or Files
- In Photos: open image → Share → select your “Convert to PNG” shortcut
- In Files: select image(s) → Share → run the shortcut
Batch tip: If your shortcut is set to accept multiple images, you can convert several in one run (great for product photos, blog images, etc.).
Convert Image is missing in Files
Confirm your device is on iOS/iPadOS 16+ (the Convert Image Files feature is commonly tied to iOS/iPadOS 16).
Confirm the file is in Files (if it’s only in Photos, first Save to Files).
Will converting JPG → PNG give me transparency?
No—JPG doesn’t support transparency, so converting it won’t create a transparent background. You’d need a background remover/editor for that.
FAQs
JPG vs JPEG — what’s the difference?
They’re the same format; “.jpg” is just a shorter extension.
Does JPG → PNG improve quality?
It won’t restore detail lost in JPG compression. PNG is lossless, but it can’t recreate missing data—often the PNG is just larger.
Where does the PNG save?
Files method: typically saved as a new file in the same folder
Shortcuts method: wherever you chose (Files folder or Photos album)
